pp. 624-644 litany-lists (of divine epithets), taken from the Expression of Man~jus`ri’s Ultimate Names
pp. 210-212 denial of self-emptiness is expounded in the Anguli-mala [‘fingered (its beads slid along its cord by the fingers, in order to count prayers) rosary’] Sutra
pp. 210-1 "a person with a childish nature picks up a piece of hail, Thinking that it is a precious vaid.urya jewel, the person carries it home and ... thinks to treat it as a treasure and carefully puts it into a vase. |
Here, /vaid.urya/ would mean ‘cat’s eye (mobile closure-valve for sea-snail’s shell)’, rather than ‘beryl’. The helix-shape of the snail-shell would be evocative of the whirlwind sometimes accompanying a hail-storm. The point of this sutra may be that wind (gaseous state) is more primary (active) than either hail (solid state) or water (liquid state); just as "(Simpl. de Coelo 273 b 45 ; Schol. Arist. 514 a 33) Anaximenes "thinking that air had a sufficient adaptability to change." (A) Furthermore, the greenness of the centre cat’s eye may have suggested that of another ae:rial phainomenon, the rainbow (said to be green in the Apokalupsis of Ioannes and in the Book of Chilam Balam), so that the rainbow’s propensity to vanish and to return would be conjurable, in connection also with its empty hollowness. |
[p. 211] Seeing that round piece of hail melt, the person thinks, "Empty ..."". |
Since hail falleth from the sky like (in the heavens) proverbial "sky-flowers", it may be relevant that in the ritual manipulation of flowers, pills made of dried flowers are placed "in a clean skull-cup" (LEF, p. 328). Flower-essences are, in modern European homoeopathy, customarily so diluted as to vanish much as the imagined vaid.urya vanished. |
p. 212 "The naked ones also meditate on all as empty. Do not say anything, you bug of the naked ones!" |
The translator supposed (fn. a) the "naked ones" to be Jaina-s; but s`unyata is not a Jaina doctrine. Not Dig-ambara Jaina-s, but rather some other denominational sectarians, perhaps Kapalika-s (empty-skull contemplators), must have been intended by the Jo-nan writer. Cf. also the Norse skull-of-Ymir contemplators of the sky, who sanctified hail (hagel) as one of their runes. |
